Freedonia Marxonia 2017

Reed Library and the 1891 Fredonia Opera House will be the venues for Freedonia Marxonia 2017 events, Thursday, Sept. 28 and Friday, Sept. 29.

Freedonia Marxonia was created by a Fredonia student in 1987 as an annual festival to celebrate the connection between Fredonia and "Freedonia," the fictional nation that serves as the setting for the 1933 Marx Brothers movie Duck Soup.

This year's theme is "Broadway and the Marx Brothers." An exhibit focusing on the Marx Brothers' three Broadway musicals (I'll Say She Is, The Cocoanuts, and Animal Crackers) opens Sept. 28 at 3:00 in Reed Library. Guest speaker Noah Diamond will present his multimedia lecture, "The Marx Brothers on Broadway: 1924-1929," that evening at the Opera House. The two-day festival also includes a lunchtime interview with Mr. Diamond, screenings of The Cocoanuts and Duck Soup, and a discussion led by Mr. Diamond about the creation of Duck Soup. The full listing of activities can be found at the Freedonia Marxonia website.

All activities are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Cindy Yochym at cynthia.yochym@fredonia.edu.

Freedonia Marxonia is supported by the Hahn Family Freedonia Marxonia Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation. Noah Diamond's appearance is also supported by the Fredonia College Foundation's Carnahan Jackson Humanities Fund and Reed Library.
